In early April 2024, I experienced a severe back injury that led to a significant spasm in the quadratus lumborum muscle. The initial sensation was intense pain in my lower back, rendering me nearly immobile and causing sharp, unbearable spasms with any movement.
Initially, painkillers provided some relief, dulling the pain slightly. However, the crucial step was consulting a specialist. I visited Pieter Leroux, a specialist osteopath at the Spine Pro clinic, who successfully realigned my musculoskeletal system and eased the muscle spasm. Although some pain remained, his guidance to incorporate walking proved invaluable for stabilizing the system and gently exercising the back muscles. Alternating hot and cold compresses and continuing with pain management were essential during the first week.
I also consulted with my esteemed yoga teachers, Olga Ilyinskaya and Corine Biria, who helped tailor my practice into a therapeutic sequence for the following 2-3 weeks. Despite the intense initial pain, which made any activity seem too difficult, it was vital to mobilize and follow the expert advice given.
From my personal experience, I can say that pain can be overcome through willpower and the desire to get better, as well as through competent actions in practice and understanding of what happened to you.
.
This personal difficulty taught me resilience and the importance of understanding one’s body. It has deepened my empathy for others’ pain and equipped me with the knowledge to help my students navigate similar challenges.
Now, with my back healed, I have resumed my full personal practice and teaching schedule.
In conclusion, treat your body with kindness, engage in yoga mindfully for enjoyment, and prioritize your health.
Keep practising;
Warm Regards. Olga
